About Southold

Southold was settled in 1640 and is considered by many historians to be the first English settlement on Long Island but undisputedly, the original and first on the North Fork. The First Presbyterian Church in Southold is the oldest English Church Society in New York State.

While traditional farming is still an important way of life for residents of the North Fork, in little over a quarter of a century the Long Island wine industry has grown from one small vineyard to 3,000 acres of vines. The majority of Long Island's vineyards are located on the North Fork where age-old growing techniques are combined with state-of-the-art technology to produce a range of world-class wines. North Fork, New York vineyard land expands across Southold and the North Fork hamlets.

The rural landscapes inspire artists to create beautiful works of art using what nature has given them. Surrounded by the Peconic Bays and Long Island Sound, the North Fork has a unique climate combined with the sea air and miles of farm land without light pollutions that seems to yield cleaner air and the bluer sky. Thus it seems only fitting that Southold is home to the Custer Institute Observatory where one can view the stars in the dark North Fork skies.

Driving on Main Road thru the charming villages and hamlets that make up the North Fork is like taking a step back in time to a gentler era, a time when agriculture supported nearly everyone's way of life.

Life is a bit slower and more laid back in this once very rural farming area. There's plenty to do and see in the string of 11 pearls considered the North Fork hamlets. The entire North Fork is rich with heritage.
