About Sag Harbor

Sag Harbor, Long Island New York is on the National Register of Historic Places

Before the English and Dutch came to Sag Harbor in the mid 1600’s, the Native Americans had settled here for the richness of the region.

In 1789 the U.S Congress declared Sag Harbor one of the first Ports of Entry in to the United States, commissioned by George Washington, a house of customs was set up. . This opened the gates of Sag Harbor, Long Island New York to people from around the world.

In the 1800’s, the whale trade was the heart beat of this beautiful harbor front community.

We recommend you visit the Sag Harbor History Room on the third floor of the John Jermain Memorial Library or spend the afternoon at the Whaling Museum on Main Street to experience more of the rich history Sag Harbor has to offer.

Today, Sag Harbor Village is one of the most quaint of the East End Villages. You can feel the history at every corner and know that the Main Street was traveled by so many of interest from foreign lands who came before us.
